Malmö - Turning Torso

This spectacular building is truly extraordinary. As the tallest landmark of the city, it dominates the skyline and can be seen from several kilometers away — even from the sea. I personally witnessed this unforgettable sight while leaving the port of Copenhagen: as our ship sailed across the water, on the distant horizon the gigantic structure appeared, rising majestically and gracefully above the landscape. It was an impressive and almost surreal moment.

The building is entirely residential, and as its name suggests, it evolves as it rises. Each section rotates slightly, creating a continuous and elegant twist that gives the tower a sense of movement and life. This architectural concept is simply fascinating and makes the building feel alive, changing with the light, the sky, and the viewer’s perspective.

The entrance is modern and welcoming, made of glass and accessed by a beautiful bridge. The automatic doors open into a bright and refined lobby. To the right, all the residents’ mailboxes are neatly arranged, while a reception area with comfortable seating and large windows allows you to observe the street and the city outside. The atmosphere is calm, elegant, and unmistakably modern.

The elevators are remarkably fast and efficient, reaching any floor — including the highest residential level, the 47th — in just a few seconds. In total, the building has 54 floors, including additional levels dedicated to meeting rooms and shared spaces, and it is served by five elevators. From every apartment and from nearly every point within the tower, the views are absolutely spectacular, offering breathtaking panoramas over Malmö, the Öresund Strait, and the sea beyond.

Located in Malmö, on the shores of the Öresund Strait, the Turning Torso has become a powerful symbol of the city’s transformation. Once an industrial harbor town, Malmö has reinvented itself as a modern, sustainable, and creative city. The tower perfectly represents this evolution — bold, innovative, and forward-looking.

Designed by the world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, the Turning Torso is considered the world’s first twisted skyscraper. Inspired by a sculpture of a rotating human torso, the building reaches a height of 190 meters and contains 147 residential apartments. Completed in 2005, it quickly gained international recognition and won the prestigious Emporis Skyscraper Award the same year. In 2015, it received the 10 Year Award from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, confirming its lasting architectural significance.

Today, although it is no longer the tallest building in Scandinavia, the Turning Torso remains unique in the world. More than just a residential tower, it is an icon of modern architecture, a landmark visible from land and sea alike, and a powerful symbol of Malmö’s ambition, creativity, and connection to the future.


Ce bâtiment spectaculaire est véritablement extraordinaire. Point culminant de la ville, il domine l'horizon et est visible à plusieurs kilomètres à la ronde, même depuis la mer. J'ai personnellement été témoin de ce spectacle inoubliable en quittant le port de Copenhague : tandis que notre navire fendait les flots, la structure gigantesque est apparue à l'horizon, s'élevant majestueusement et avec grâce au-dessus du paysage. C'était un moment impressionnant, presque surréaliste. 

L'immeuble est entièrement résidentiel et, comme son nom l'indique, il évolue au fur et à mesure de sa hauteur. Chaque section pivote légèrement, créant une torsion continue et élégante qui confère à la tour une impression de mouvement et de vie. Ce concept architectural est tout simplement fascinant et donne vie au bâtiment, qui semble se transformer au gré de la lumière, du ciel et du point de vue de l'observateur. 

L'entrée, moderne et accueillante, est entièrement vitrée et accessible par une magnifique passerelle. Les portes automatiques s'ouvrent sur un hall lumineux et raffiné. À droite, les boîtes aux lettres des résidents sont soigneusement disposées, tandis qu'un espace de réception avec des sièges confortables et de grandes fenêtres offre une vue imprenable sur la rue et la ville. L'atmosphère y est calme, élégante et résolument moderne.

Les ascenseurs sont remarquablement rapides et efficaces, desservant tous les étages, y compris le 47e et dernier étage résidentiel, en quelques secondes seulement. L'immeuble compte 54 étages au total, dont des niveaux supplémentaires dédiés aux salles de réunion et aux espaces partagés, et est desservi par cinq ascenseurs. De chaque appartement et de presque tous les points de la tour, la vue est absolument spectaculaire, offrant des panoramas à couper le souffle sur Malmö, le détroit d'Öresund et la mer. 

Située à Malmö, sur les rives du détroit d'Öresund, la Turning Torso est devenue un symbole fort de la transformation de la ville. Ancienne ville portuaire industrielle, Malmö s'est réinventée en une ville moderne, durable et créative. La tour représente parfaitement cette évolution : audacieuse, innovante et tournée vers l'avenir.

Paris - La Belle au bois dormant 08 march 14 july 2025

La Belle au bois dormant revient à l'Opéra de Paris. Elle n'était plus à l'affiche depuis plusieurs saisons et nous la retrouvons enfin dans sa splendide production, l'une des plus belles du monde. La version de Noureev est tout simplement sensationnelle. J'imagine que les billets seront épuisés dès leur mise en vente, les amateurs parisiens et internationaux de ballet classique étant impatients de revoir ce fabuleux ballet avec la merveilleuse musique de Tchaïkovski. La chorégraphie est de Rudolf Noureev avec ses fabuleux pas de deux, avec ses danses d'ensemble spectaculaires, qui raviront le public. Le directeur musical de cette première série de représentations sera Vello Pähn. Bleuenn Battistoni, l'exquise star de la compagnie, sera la danseuse étoile choisie pour offrir la première Aurore de cette série tant attendue. Guillaume Diop, le spectaculaire danseur étoile qui nous rappelle Noureev même avec sa technique spectaculaire, vraiment très jolie , offrira une entrée impressionnante au deuxième acte, j'imagine déjà les applaudissements. Un couple définitivement merveilleux pour la première représentation du ballet le plus attendu de ces dernières années. Ce sera sans aucun doute un événement culturel que personne à Paris ne voudra manquer, même si j'imagine que les billets seront plus que vendus, mais il faut se dépêcher au cas où il en resterait quelques uns de dernière minute, le succès est plus que assuré , garanti, non seulement par les étoiles, merveilleux, mais par la fabuleuse compagnie de danse de l'Opéra de Paris, qui nous laisse émerveillés à chaque fois qu'ils interprètent un ballet classique de Noureev, certainement va a être un spectacle inoubliable.  Les stars, Sae Eun Park et Paul Marque danseront également ce merveilleux ballet, le couple fabuleux et sensationnel qui nous a tant émerveillé dans tous les ballets qu'ils dansent ensemble, fera sans aucun doute l'émerveillement du tout Paris, en les voyant ensemble dans le célèbre pas de deux de ce ballet historique et légendaire de Tchaïkovski. La superstar Dorothee Gilbert devrait également danser quelques représentations de ce ballet mémorable aux côtés de Guillaume Diop. Ils ont dansé ensemble dans Casse-Noisette avec un succès immense et inégalé. Alors, sans aucun doute, nous avons tous hâte de voir ce couple spectaculaire, et je suis personnellement super heureux de savoir que Dorothée Gilbert dansera Aurora, je ne la manquerai, cette représentation pour rien au monde. 
Inès Mcintosh et Thomas Docquir danseront les rôles principaux aussi ,les beaux premiers danseurs nous vont offrir des belles soirées magiques . La première danseuse Héloïse Bourdon dansera à nouveau le rôle d'Aurore qu'elle a déjà dansé en décembre 2013 , elle était éblouissante et ce 2024 elle le sera encore plus , on a hâte de voir sa belle Aurore , Thomas Docquir dansera avec elle , deux représentations . On est très heureux de revoir Héloïse Bourdon comme Aurore . La série précédente était très belle aussi avec les inoubliables Aurores comme celles de Myriam Ould-Braham , pour moi l'aurore idéale , aussi on a vu , Amandine Albisson , Ludmila Pagliero , Héloïse Bourdon , La fabuleuse Laura Hecquet , l'étoile Eleonora Abbagnatto, une Aurore sensationnelle et exquise qui ouvrait la série en décembre 2013 avec tous les billets vendus .Le succès fut immense et tout le monde voulait voir n'importe quelle distribution ,tout était complet ,le succès fut historique comme le va être ce mois de mars 2025 .On a aussi la grande chance de voir Clara Moussigne et Lorenzo Lelli. Ils danseront une représentation mâtiné , une opportunité d'or pour pouvoir découvrir cette danseuse qui nous a émerveillé dans le pas de trois de Paquita , une future étoile avec le somptueux et magnifique danseur Lorenzo Lelli. Une mâtiné à ne pas manquer absolument . La première danseuse Hohyun Kang et Lorenzo Lelli nous offrent la fabuleuse opportunité de découvrir une nouvelle Aurore , celle de la première danseuse Hohyun Kang qui a dansé divinement les pas de trois dans la série précédente de Paquita . Elle était aussi une spectaculaire Kitri !!! Maintenant on va découvrir sa prestigieuse danse impérial et impeccable dans le rôle le plus important et difficile de l'histoire du ballet classique , Aurore . On a hâte de voir cette représentation !!! 👍😉
l'étoile Léonore Baulac et l'étoile Marc Moreau danseront également à certaines dates et quel plaisir de voir l'Aurore de la délicieuse danseuse étoile Léonore Baulac, quel plaisir. Marc Moreau, l'élégant danseur, nous offrira un prince de rêve, un couple merveilleux. Valentine Colasante, ma danseuse préférée, est également présente dans cette série de la belle au bois dormant , c'est une grande émotion de découvrir la danseuse que nous avons tant aimée en Kitri comme quand elle dansait la danseuse de rue dans Don Quichotte ,elle était la vedette de la soirée ,Valentine capturé l'attention de la salle depuis le moment qu'elle entre sur scène et dans toutes ses interventions comme Paquita et bien sûr sa merveilleuse Odette et la sensuelle Odile, elle a encore gravé notre mémoire avec son spectaculaire lac des cygnes. Guillaume Diop, qui a dansé Paquita avec elle avec grand succès, dansera également avec la superstar  Valentine Colasante. La merveilleuse star internationale Hannah O'Neill sera une Aurore divine aux côtés de l'inégalable danseur français Germain Louvet qui incarnera le Prince Désiré. Nous aurons droit à des prestations mémorables. Ces fabuleux couple fait partie de mes danseurs préférés au monde entier. La danseuse néo-zélandaise et japonaise éblouit le public par son magnétisme et son charisme à chacune de ses apparitions sur scène. De superbes scènes en duo avec Germain Louvet nous attendent à Paris. La danseuse étoile que j'ai tant aimée dans Odette Odile aux côtés de Mathieu Ganio, et qui elle-même incarnait Aurore dans la précédente série de la Belle au bois dormant, dansera également aux côtés de Guillaume Diop, il s'agit de l'extraordinaire et éblouissante danseuse étoile Amandine Albisson. Elle fut nommée étoile peu après sa première Aurore quand elle était encore première danseuse . Nous sommes ravis d'avoir la chance de revoir comme Aurore à cette magnifique danseuse française .

Il a passé un jour de la première représentation du ballet, et tous ses éloges, de cette production divine. Le match du jour 8 a suivi l'extraordinaire Bleuenn Battistoni et le magnifique Guillaume Diop, qui ont fait les protagonistes de la nuit, une nuit magique, une danse classique au plus haut niveau. Une merveille. Le 11 , la sensationnelle Inès McIntosh et l'élégant Thomas Docquir ont obtenu un autre fabuleux succès. Le 14 mars, Hohyun Kang et Lorenzo Lelli ont créé un duo sensationnel protagoniste, qui a fait les débuts de cette danseuse qui a obtenu un grand succès en Kitri, comme elle l'a obtenu dans Aurora. Lorenzo Lelli a également fait ses débuts dans le rôle avec grand succès. Héloïse Bourdon a joué le jour 22 le rôle principal, qui a déjà joué dans la série précédente, et elle est venue cette fois avec l'extraordinaire Thomas Docquir. Héloïse arrivera chez Aurora le prochain 31 mars avec Thomas Docquir. Une fabuleuse représentation que nous espérons . Clara Mousseigne et Lorenzo Lelli ont dansé le 23 mars, c'était le début de cete merveilleuse danseuse, le succès a été incommensurable, vraiment une étoile est née cette nuit-là, la jeune danseuse a offert une Aurore divine, onirique, je dirais une Aurore idéale, comme le reste des danseurs de l'opéra, car ils sont tous vraiment exceptionnels. Lorenzo Lelli a également connu un énorme succès ; le public a été émerveillé et a quitté la salle enchanté après cette présentation magique de pure danse classique au niveau le plus exigeant – une merveille. Le 28 mars, Sae Eun Park  fait  ses débuts dans cette série . La merveilleuse danseuse que nous avons tant aimée comme Giselle, au Lac des Cygnes, comme Kitri et Paquita, absolument tout ce que'elle danse est divine ¡¡¡  et nous espérons donc une Aurora de premier niveau¡¡  l'accompagnera  Lorenzo Lelli. Paul Marque, la grande étoile de l'opéra, est programmé sur le Web de l'opéra, pour jouer avec Sae Eun Park dans de futures représentations. le 18 avril sera la première des trois fonctions programmées pour Dorothée Gilbert et Guillaume Diop. It's been a few days since the first performance of the ballet, and everything is praise for this lavish production. The cast on the 8th was as follows: the extraordinary Bleuenn Battistoni and the magnificent Guillaume Diop, they were the stars of the evening, a magical evening, full of classical dance at the highest level. A marvel. On the 11th, the sensational Inès McIntosh and the elegant Thomas Docquir danced, obtaining another fabulous success. On March 14th, Hohyun Kang and Lorenzo Lelli offered a sensational leading duo. It was the debut of this dancer who had already achieved great success in Kitri, as she had in Aurora. Sleeping Beauty is back at the Paris Opera, it hasn't been scheduled for a few seasons and we finally have it back in its splendorous production, one of the most beautiful in the world. Noureev's version is simply sensational. I imagine that the tickets will be sold out as soon as they go on sale, Parisians and international fans of classical ballet are eager to see this fabulous ballet again with Tchaikovsky's wonderful music. The choreography is by Rudolf Noureev with his fabulous pas de deux, with his spectacular ensemble dances, which will delight the audience. The musical director for this first series of performances will be Vello Pähn. Bleuenn Battistoni , the exquisite star of the company, will be chosen to offer the first Aurora of this long-awaited series. Guillaume Diop , the spectacular star dancer who reminds us of Noureev himself with his spectacular technique, will offer an impressive entrance in the second act, I can already imagine the applause. Definitely a wonderful couple for the first performance of the most anticipated ballet of recent years. La Bella Addormentata torna all'Opéra di Parigi. Non era in programma da diverse stagioni e finalmente la ritroviamo nella sua splendida produzione, una delle più belle al mondo. La versione di Noureev è semplicemente sensazionale. Immagino che i biglietti saranno esauriti non appena saranno messi in vendita; gli appassionati di balletto classico parigini e internazionali sono impazienti di rivedere questo favoloso balletto con la meravigliosa musica di Čajkovskij. La coreografia è di Rudolf Noureev con i suoi favolosi passi a due e le sue spettacolari danze d'insieme, che delizieranno il pubblico. Il direttore musicale di questa prima serie di spettacoli sarà Vello Pähn. Bleuenn Battistoni, la stella d'eccezione dell'azienda, sarà scelta per presentare la prima Aurora di questa attesissima serie. Guillaume Diop, lo spettacolare ballerino che ci ricorda Noureev per la sua tecnica spettacolare, offrirà un ingresso impressionante nel secondo atto, immagino già gli applausi. Sarà senza dubbio un evento culturale che nessuno a Parigi vorrà perdersi, anche se immagino che i biglietti saranno più che esauriti, ma bisogna affrettarsi nel caso in cui ne rimangano alcuni all'ultimo minuto, il successo è più che garantito, non solo dalle stelle meravigliose, ma dalla favolosa compagnia di danza dell'Opéra di Parigi, che ci lascia stupiti ogni volta che mette in scena un classico di Noureev, sicuramente uno spettacolo indimenticabile. Le star, Sae Eun Park e Paul Marque balleranno anche loro questo meraviglioso balletto, la favolosa coppia che ci ha stupito così tanto in tutti i balletti che ballano insieme, senza dubbio, farà la meraviglia di tutta Parigi, vedendoli insieme nel famoso e il celebre passo a due di questo storico e leggendario balletto di Čajkovskij. Anche la superstar Dorothee Gilbert danzerà uno spettacolo di questo memorabile balletto insieme a Guillaume Diop. Hanno danzato insieme nello Schiaccianoci con un successo immenso e insuperabile. Sono trascorsi alcuni giorni dalla prima rappresentazione del balletto e non si può che elogiare questa sontuosa produzione. Il cast dell'8 era composto da: la straordinaria Bleuenn Battistoni e il magnifico Guillaume Diop, le star della serata, una notte magica, all'insegna della danza classica al massimo livello. Una meraviglia. L'11 hanno danzato la sensazionale Inès McIntosh e l'elegante Thomas Docquir, ottenendo un altro favoloso successo. Il 14 marzo Hohyun Kang e Lorenzo Lelli hanno offerto un sensazionale duetto principale; si è trattato del debutto di questa ballerina che aveva già ottenuto un grande successo in Kitri, così come in Aurora. Anche Lorenzo Lelli esordisce nel ruolo con grande successo. Il 22, Héloïse Bourdon ha danzato il ruolo principale, già interpretato nella serie precedente, e lo ha fatto accanto allo straordinario Thomas Docquir. Lyon - La forza del destino 14 march -02 april 2025

 

From April 14 to 2, we can see Verdi's opera La Forza del Destiny in the impressive opera house in the city of Lyon. This great opera has been seen in many European theatres recently, such as in Barcelona or Milan. Paris has seen La Forza del Destino for several years on a regular basis, but it has not been performed in Lyon for 43 years, so we are facing a cultural historical event of the first order for the French city. The opera lasts three and a half hours with an intermission.

Questa grande opera è stata rappresentata di recente in molti teatri europei, come quello di Barcellona o Milano. A Parigi la forza del destino si è verificata regolarmente per diversi anni, ma a Lione non accadeva da 43 anni, quindi ci troviamo di fronte a un evento culturale storico di prim'ordine per la città francese. L'opera dura tre ore e mezza compreso l'intervallo.

Belisario is a tragedia lirica (lyric tragedy) in three acts composed by Gaetano Donizetti to a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano. The text was based on an adaptation by Luigi Marchionni of a drama by the German playwright Eduard von Schenk.

Cammarano — one of the most important librettists of the 19th century — wrote around forty libretti. His collaborations with Donizetti include Lucia di Lammermoor, Roberto Devereux, and Poliuto. For Verdi, he would later write Il trovatore and Luisa Miller. His gift for high Romantic drama is clearly evident in Belisario, even if the opera’s structure has sometimes been criticized for dramatic unevenness.

The opera followed closely after Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) and Maria Stuarda (1835). While those two works have remained firmly in the repertory, Belisario gradually became a rarity.
















Premiere

Belisario premiered at Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 4 February 1836.

The premiere was a resounding success. Contemporary critics praised the work enthusiastically. One review in La Gazzetta privilegiata proclaimed:

“A new masterwork has been added to Italian music… Belisario not only pleased and delighted, but also conquered, enflamed and ravished the full auditorium.”

Despite this early triumph, Donizetti himself later acknowledged that the opera did not reach the artistic height of Lucia di Lammermoor. He felt that the dramatic weaknesses of the plot limited its ultimate impact.

Carolina Ungher was particularly important to Donizetti. So impressed was he with her artistry that he created the role of Antonina specifically for her. Two years later, he would also compose the title role of Maria de Rudenz for her, again at La Fenice.


Subject and Plot

The opera is loosely based on the historical figure Belisarius, the great 6th-century general of the Byzantine Empire under Emperor Justinian I.

However, the story takes considerable dramatic liberties. The plot centers on betrayal, false accusation, paternal tragedy, and eventual reconciliation:

  • Antonina, convinced (incorrectly) that her husband Belisario ordered the death of their infant son years earlier, seeks revenge.

  • Through intrigue and false testimony, Belisario is accused of treason.

  • He is blinded and exiled.

  • Their daughter Irene remains devoted to him.

  • Alamiro, initially presented as a prisoner, ultimately turns out to be the long-lost son.

  • The opera concludes with belated recognition and reconciliation — but too late to prevent tragedy.

The themes of injustice, paternal suffering, and redemption echo other 19th-century operatic subjects, and one can sense dramatic elements that anticipate Verdi.


19th-Century Reception

After its Venetian success, Belisario spread rapidly. During the 19th century, it was staged in 31 cities across Europe and the Americas.

Notable early performances include:

  • London – 1 April 1837

  • Philadelphia – 29 July 1843

  • New York – 14 February 1844

Its popularity endured for several decades. However, by the end of the century the opera had faded from the repertory. After a performance in Koblenz in 1899, it virtually disappeared.


20th- and 21st-Century Revivals

The revival of interest in Donizetti’s lesser-known works during the 20th century brought Belisario back to life.

Important modern revivals include:

  • 1969 – Teatro La Fenice

  • 1970 – Bergamo

  • 1972 – London

  • 1973 – Naples

  • 1981 – Buenos Aires

  • 1990 – Rutgers University (New Jersey)

Among the most celebrated interpreters of Antonina in modern times was the Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer, whose performances were instrumental in restoring attention to the opera. The baritone Giuseppe Taddei also contributed significantly to its rediscovery.

In 2010, the opera was performed by Buenos Aires Lírica. In February 2011, a concert performance at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London featured soprano Nelly Miricioiu under the baton of Richard Bonynge.

In 2012, the opera received a new production at the Teatro Donizetti as part of the Donizetti Festival, using the critical edition. That same year, the BBC Symphony Orchestra performed it in concert in London with soprano Joyce El-Khoury and baritone Nicola Alaimo. This cast recorded the opera for Opera Rara, providing a high-quality studio reference.

Despite these efforts, statistics from Operabase confirm that Belisario remains rarely staged in modern seasons.


Musical Characteristics

Musically, Belisario belongs firmly to Donizetti’s mature bel canto period. The score contains:

  • Noble baritone writing for the title role

  • Dramatically intense soprano scenes for Antonina

  • Lyrical and filial tenderness in Irene’s music

  • Large ensembles and concertati typical of the period

The baritone role is especially noteworthy. It anticipates the strong, morally complex Verdi baritone — one reason the opera is of particular interest in the evolution of Italian Romantic opera.

While critics have sometimes faulted the libretto’s structure, many agree that Donizetti’s melodic inspiration remains abundant, especially in the great scenes of paternal suffering.

Belisario stands as one of Donizetti’s most intriguing neglected operas — admired in its day, forgotten for decades, and revived thanks to devoted artists and specialist labels.

It may not have the flawless dramatic architecture of Lucia di Lammermoor, but it contains powerful music, a commanding baritone role, and moments of genuine emotional depth. For lovers of bel canto rarities, it is not merely a curiosity — it is a work of real beauty and historical importance.

There are operas that blaze across the centuries like comets, and others that glow more quietly — waiting for patient listeners to rediscover their light. Belisario belongs to the latter. Among the many jewels created by Gaetano Donizetti, it remains one of the most noble and unjustly forgotten.

Yet its birth was anything but obscure.


A Night of Fire and Glory in Venice

On the evening of 4 February 1836, the chandeliers of Teatro La Fenice shimmered above a glittering audience. Venice, suspended between water and sky, was wrapped in winter mist; gondolas rocked gently along the canals, and the great opera house — already famed for its elegance and acoustics — glowed like a palace of music.

La Fenice, “The Phoenix,” had risen from fire more than once, and even today it remains one of the most beautiful theatres in the world — a sanctuary of gold leaf, velvet, and whispered expectation. On that night in 1836, it witnessed the premiere of a new opera: Belisario.

Donizetti was at the height of his creative powers. Only months earlier, he had conquered Europe with Lucia di Lammermoor. Now he returned to Venice with a work of darker hue, shaped not by romantic madness but by injustice, betrayal, and paternal suffering.

The libretto was by Salvatore Cammarano, one of the great poets of Italian opera. Cammarano, who would later give Verdi Il trovatore and Luisa Miller, and Donizetti Roberto Devereux and Poliuto, had already demonstrated his genius for high Romantic tragedy. For Belisario, he drew upon an adaptation of a drama by Eduard von Schenk, transforming historical material into operatic passion.

Applause resounded beneath the painted ceiling; Venice had embraced its new tragedy.


A Story of Love, Blindness, and Recognition

The drama of Belisario unfolds with almost Shakespearean intensity.

Belisario, victorious general of the Byzantine Empire, stands at the height of glory. Yet within his own home, suspicion festers. His wife Antonina believes that years earlier he ordered the death of their infant son. Consumed by grief and convinced of his cruelty, she turns against him.

Through intrigue and false accusation, Belisario is charged with treason before the Emperor Giustiniano. Stripped of honor, condemned unjustly, he is blinded — one of the most harrowing moments in bel canto opera — and sent into exile.

Only Irene, his devoted daughter, remains faithful to him. She becomes his guide, his comfort, his living conscience.

Meanwhile, Alamiro — a young prisoner taken under Belisario’s protection — gradually emerges as more than he seems. In one of opera’s most moving recognitions, he is revealed to be the lost son, believed murdered long ago.

But revelation comes too late to restore what injustice has destroyed. Reconciliation is achieved, yet tragedy leaves its mark. The opera closes not in easy triumph but in a noble, wounded dignity.


From Triumph to Oblivion

After its Venetian success, Belisario traveled widely. Throughout the 19th century it was performed in 31 cities across Europe and the Americas. London heard it in 1837; Philadelphia in 1843; New York in 1844. For decades it remained part of the international repertory.

And yet, gradually, tastes shifted. Donizetti’s own judgment was sober: he recognized that Belisario, for all its power, did not equal the dramatic perfection of Lucia di Lammermoor. Critics later observed that had he poured into it music of the same consistently inspired caliber as Lucia, its structural weaknesses might have mattered less.

By the end of the century, it disappeared. After a performance in Koblenz in 1899, silence fell.


Resurrection in the 20th Century

Like the theatre of its birth, Belisario would rise again.

In 1969 it returned to Teatro La Fenice, where it had first triumphed. Revivals followed in Bergamo, London, Naples, Buenos Aires, and even at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Among its champions, the luminous Turkish soprano Leyla Gencer stands pre-eminent. Her passionate advocacy restored Antonina to the stage and revealed the opera’s dramatic depth to a new generation. The great Italian baritone Giuseppe Taddei also contributed to its revival.

In the 21st century, further performances — including a concert in London under Richard Bonynge and a critically significant production at the Teatro Donizetti — renewed interest. The BBC Symphony Orchestra presented a concert performance in 2012 with Joyce El-Khoury and Nicola Alaimo, later recorded for Opera Rara, giving the work a modern studio monument.

Yet even today, it remains rarely staged — a precious rarity rather than a repertory staple.


The Music: Noble and Wounded

Musically, Belisario offers treasures for those willing to listen.

The title role is one of the great early Romantic baritone creations — noble, introspective, wounded. It foreshadows the psychological depth that Verdi would later explore. Antonina’s music ranges from fiery accusation to broken remorse. Irene embodies filial devotion in lyrical, tender phrases. The ensembles rise with the grandeur typical of Donizetti’s mature style.

There are pages of genuine inspiration — moments when melody seems to suspend time. And perhaps that is the true heart of Belisario: not perfection, but humanity.


La Fenice and the Echo of 1836

To imagine that premiere at La Fenice is to glimpse a moment when Venice breathed as one with the music. The gold balconies, the flicker of candlelight, the rustle of silk gowns, the rising murmur before the overture — all of it forming the cradle of a new tragedy.

Even today, when one enters La Fenice, restored again from fire and loss, it is easy to imagine Donizetti standing in a stage box, listening to his music soar upward into the painted heavens.

Belisario may not be performed often. You may never have seen it live — and few have. But in its pages lives a profound meditation on honor, blindness, forgiveness, and paternal love. It is an opera that waits patiently, like its hero in exile, for audiences willing to hear its noble voice once more.

And perhaps that very rarity makes it all the more precious.
