The Nutcracker ballet - 31 Dec 2025

In 2025, many of the world’s great opera houses and ballet theatres will remain alive with magic until the very last day of the year, and some of my personal favorites will offer unforgettable performances to close the season.

At the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, the year will end with a performance of The Nutcracker, the beloved ballet by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, choreographed by Vasily Vainonen. The evening will shine thanks to Renata Shakirova, whose spectacular technique, absolute security on stage, radiant presence and irresistible charisma make her the perfect artist to close the year at the Mariinsky. Dancing alongside her will be the magnificent principal dancer Timur Askerov, forming a partnership of elegance, strength and musicality that promises to enchant the audience on this final night of 2025.

In Milan, La Scala will welcome the New Year’s Eve with La Principessa Aurora. The étoile of the company and one of the greatest ballerinas in the world today, Nicoletta Manni, will once again embody Aurora after the great success of previous performances. On this special night, her art will shine even more brightly. By her side, the elegant and sophisticated Prince Désiré will be danced by the fabulous Timofej Andrijashenko, whose princely beauty and cinematic presence seem worthy of a Perrault fairy tale. From his very first entrance, the audience will applaud with enthusiasm. This ballet of ballets will delight a La Scala audience made up not only of Milanese ballet lovers, but also of admirers from all over the world who have come to see Italy’s most internationally celebrated ballerina live on stage.

In Paris, at the Opéra Bastille, the year will close with the final performance of a highly successful revival of Notre-Dame de Paris. After seeing stars such as Roxane Stojanov and Amandine Albisson triumph in previous days, the last performance of the year will feature a remarkable cast, led by the divine Sae Eun Park as Esmeralda. Alongside her, Francesco Mura as Quasimodo, Pablo Legasa as Frollo and Milo Avêque as Phoebus, together with other outstanding dancers of the company, will offer a powerful and moving conclusion to the ballet year at the Bastille.

In London, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden will also bid farewell to 2025 with The Nutcracker. On 31 December, an extraordinary cast will take the stage, led by the exquisite Annette Buvoli as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Lukas B. Brændsrød as the Prince. Sae Maeda will dance Clara with charm and sensitivity, while the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, conducted by Charlotte Politi, will bring Tchaikovsky’s music to life. It will be a performance that none of the lucky attendees will ever forget.

All around the world, The Nutcracker will be performed on this final day of the year, and thousands of people will gather to experience once more one of the most beloved ballets in the classical repertoire. With Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable music and the brilliance of today’s greatest dancers, ballet will once again offer a magical farewell to the year 2025.

A magical winter scene unfolds on stage as a large corps de ballet fills the space with harmony, light, and movement. Dozens of ballerinas, dressed in shimmering white tutus reminiscent of snowflakes, dance gracefully around a magnificent Christmas tree that rises at the center of the stage. The tree glows softly with warm golden lights, crowned by a radiant star, while beautifully wrapped gifts rest beneath its branches, adding a sense of wonder and celebration.

Snow falls gently from above, creating the illusion of a fairytale winter night. Each ballerina moves with exquisite precision and serenity, their arms floating upward as if carried by the music, their bodies perfectly aligned in classical formations. Balanced en pointe, they seem almost weightless, as though they belong to the snowfall itself. The cool blue lighting enhances the dreamlike atmosphere, transforming the stage into an enchanted forest where time stands still.

The dancers’ synchronized movements reflect the purity and elegance of classical ballet, evoking the iconic Snowflake Waltz from The Nutcracker. Together, they create a living tapestry of motion, grace, and musicality, surrounding the Christmas tree like guardians of a timeless holiday dream. The scene captures not only technical brilliance, but also a deep sense of joy, nostalgia, and festive magic.

It is a moment where ballet, music, and winter fantasy unite — a celebration of beauty and tradition that feels like the perfect way to honor the spirit of Christmas and the enduring enchantment of classical dance.

Paris - Notre-Dame de Paris - 06 / 31 December 2025

Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris: A December to Remember at the Opéra Bastille

This December, the immense stage of the Opéra Bastille will once again glow with the vivid colors, dramatic tension, and irresistible theatricality of Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris. Created in 1965 for the Paris Opera Ballet, this masterpiece remains one of Petit’s most iconic works, blending neoclassical precision with the irresistible flair of music-hall — a signature only he could invent.

Inspired by Victor Hugo’s monumental novel, Petit transforms the medieval world of Paris into a living fresco: Esmeralda’s radiant innocence, Quasimodo’s heartbreaking devotion, Frollo’s torment, and Phoebus’s seduction unfold against a chorus of crowds that shift from joy to cruelty in a heartbeat. With Maurice Jarre’s powerful score, René Allio’s evocative sets, and Yves Saint Laurent’s legendary costumes — shimmering like the stained-glass windows of a cathedral — this ballet is a feast for both heart and eyes.

But what makes this revival truly thrilling are the exceptional étoiles bringing these characters to life.

Amandine Albisson, with her luminous presence and impeccable French classical line, will bring a deeply poetic and noble Esmeralda.
Roxane Stojanov, so expressive and magnetic, promises an Esmeralda of fire, vulnerability, and emotional truth — a role she embodies with rare sincerity.
Sae Eun Park, ethereal yet powerfully grounded, will offer a breathtaking interpretation full of purity, refinement, and dramatic nuance.

Three extraordinary ballerinas. Three unforgettable interpretations.

Alongside them, stars such as Hugo Marchand, Francesco Mura, Jérémy-Loup Quer, Florent Melac, Pablo Legasa, Milo Avêque and many others will shape a series of performances that are sure to become part of the ballet’s living history. And with the December 17 performance featuring yet another dazzling cast — plus the mystery still surrounding the Esmeraldas for December 25 and 30 — anticipation grows even more.

The Opéra Bastille is expected to be completely full, as it is for every ballet presented in this grand theatre. And rightly so: Notre-Dame de Paris is not just a ballet — it is an event, a celebration of Roland Petit’s genius, and a testament to the incomparable artistry of today’s Paris Opera dancers.

If you are traveling to Paris this December, you are in for an unforgettable journey.
A ballet, a masterpiece, and a constellation of stars — all under one roof. ✨🩰🇫🇷

Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris: A December of Pure Ballet Magic at the Opéra Bastille ✨

A celebration of genius, beauty, and the extraordinary étoiles who will bring Paris to life.

This December, Paris prepares for one of the most anticipated ballet events of the season: the return of Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris to the stage of the Opéra Bastille. More than a revival, it is a tribute — to a choreographer whose imagination reshaped 20th-century ballet, to a literary masterpiece that continues to move us, and to the modern stars of the Paris Opera Ballet who inherit this legacy with brilliance and depth.

🌟 The Genius of Roland Petit

Roland Petit was never just a choreographer — he was a storyteller, a sculptor of emotion, a master of theatrical instinct. His creations defied convention: sensual yet refined, dramatic yet balanced, always infused with a cinematic sense of beauty. Works such as Carmen, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort, La Rose Malade, and Notre-Dame de Paris have become pillars of the international ballet repertoire.

In Notre-Dame de Paris, premiered in 1965 at the Paris Opera, Petit achieves a rare alchemy:

Every movement reveals his signature: sharp épaulements, sculptural poses, breathtaking lifts, and storytelling that grips the viewer from the first step to the last.

🎨 A Masterpiece of Collaboration

Petit surrounded himself with an extraordinary creative team — artists whose names are now legendary.

  • Maurice Jarre’s powerful, haunting score propels the drama with rhythmic urgency and lyrical tenderness.

  • René Allio’s sets evoke the weight and mystery of medieval Paris, with shadows echoing across towering cathedral arches.

  • Yves Saint Laurent’s iconic costumes shimmer like the stained-glass windows that inspired them, full of vivid color, elegance, and theatrical poetry.

The ballet is a moving fresco, a living painting, a story that feels at once medieval and timeless.

❤️ A Story of Passion, Darkness, and Humanity

Victor Hugo’s novel is, above all, a story about desire, difference, cruelty, and compassion. Petit distilled these themes masterfully into choreography:

  • Esmeralda, radiant and free-spirited

  • Quasimodo, tormented yet full of pure love

  • Frollo, consumed by forbidden obsession

  • Phoebus, emblem of charm, seduction, and fate

The crowd becomes a character in itself — a turbulent chorus shifting from joy to violence, echoing the contradictions of humanity.

⭐ A December Full of Stars: The Dancers Who Will Bring Paris to Life

One of the great joys of this production is the brilliant succession of étoiles who will embody these unforgettable characters.

Amandine Albisson — A luminous and noble Esmeralda

Amandine brings grace, purity, and a classical refinement that enhances every role she dances. Her Esmeralda promises to be deeply musical and beautifully sculpted, blending fragility and inner fire.

Roxane Stojanov — Expressive, magnetic, unforgettable

Few dancers possess Roxane’s emotional honesty on stage. With her radiant presence and dramatic instinct, she gives Esmeralda a humanity that resonates long after the curtain falls. Her December 7 performance will surely be a highlight of the entire run.

Sae Eun Park — Ethereal strength and absolute artistry

The first Korean étoile in the company’s history, Sae Eun Park dances with a purity that feels almost supernatural. Light as a sigh yet anchored by formidable technique, she will bring an Esmeralda of poetry, delicacy, and quiet power.

Three interpretations, three worlds — each a gift for the audience.

And around them, an extraordinary ensemble of partners and stars:
Hugo Marchand, Jérémy-Loup Quer, Francesco Mura, Florent Melac, Pablo Legasa, Milo Avêque, among others. Their dramatic presence and physical artistry will sculpt Quasimodo, Frollo, and Phoebus in ways both powerful and heartbreaking.

🔍 Dates of Special Anticipation

  • December 6 — Opening performance with Albisson & Marchand

  • December 7 — The poetic combination of Stojanov & Quer

  • December 17 — A brilliant cast led by Sae Eun Park & Francesco Mura

  • December 25 & 30 — Cast mystery! Who will be Esmeralda? Paris waits in suspense…

And on December 12 & 16, the ballet will be recorded for a 2027 worldwide cinema release — proof of its enduring artistic weight.

🎭 The Opéra Bastille: A Stage Worthy of Legend

Vast, modern, and commanding, the Opéra Bastille is the perfect setting for such a monumental ballet. Every December performance is expected to be sold out, as always when ballet takes over this immense Parisian stage. The atmosphere will be electric, with audiences from all over the world gathering for an unforgettable artistic experience.

✨ A December to Remember

Roland Petit’s Notre-Dame de Paris is more than a ballet — it is a celebration of imagination, passion, and the power of dance to convey the deepest of human truths.

This 2025 revival, danced by the Paris Opera Ballet’s finest artists — including my beloved stars with color, drama, beauty, and emotion.

If you are lucky enough to be in Paris this December, prepare for a magical journey.
The cathedral bells will ring, the stage will blaze with color, and Roland Petit’s genius will live again in every step, every note, every heartbeat.

✨🩰 Paris awaits you.  And if you can't come to Paris, don't worry, it will be recorded and shown in cinemas worldwide, so that the ballet reaches all audiences and every corner of the planet, so that no one misses out on seeing this work of art.

Paris - Don Quixote Opéra Bastille - 21 March to 24 April 2024

The ballet Don Quixote returns to the stage of the Bastille opera house. I would say that it has not been performed at the Palais Garnier for years, I myself was in the legendary 1999 performance at the Palais Garnier with Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche, I had the chance to had a place in the box on the first floor just above the orchestra and so I saw the legendary Sylvie Guillem up close. Fortunately, there are still YouTube videos of her and Nicolas so that you can enjoy this memorable show in your thousands. sometimes, and I think, I'm not sure that that evening Agnès Letestu played the role of the queen of the dryads, I think, the video exists, but now I don't remember if it's her that I I saw live or Marie Agnès Gillot, I would have to look in the program, I still have it. I believe that the ballet was then given at the Opéra Bastille and it has already remained in this theater forever. Indeed, in 2007, I attended a few performances with Laetitia Pujol and Nicolas Le Riche, and the next day, Agnès Letestu and José Martínez gave two unforgettable evenings, an evening at the ballet with unforgettable stars. We are now in a new generation full of enthusiasm and magic who will offer unforgettable performances of this fabulous ballet. To begin with, we are fortunate to have as our conductor Gavriel Heine, who I would say is one of the most expert conductors in Russian music having spent so many years conducting the Mariinsky Orchestra in St. Petersburg, so you can't have a better director than this to conduct the delightful music that Minkus wrote for the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, and although it was premiered in Moscow, the definitive version choreographed by Petipa and with Minkus' music revised by the composer himself, had its definitive premiere in St. Petersburg in the same theater that hosted a few years earlier the world premiere of the opera La forza del destiny with the presence of Verdi himself. At the end of 2023, London offered numerous very successful performances of this ballet, and it is now Paris' turn. The stars of the company, specifically the two most recently promoted stars, Sae Eun Park and Paul Marque, will be responsible for offering the first performance of this long-awaited series. Actually, Sae Eun Park has already danced the role of Kitri and she is wonderful, I saw her with Kimin Kim, and you could honestly say that they were perfect, really, sublime. She therefore promises to be a wonderful Kitri alongside Paul Marque who always amazes us with his technique and his friendliness, so this couple promises a dream first performance. The couple composed of Hannah O'Neill and Germain Louvet will offer an electrifying performance, I really like it, I think she is an exceptional dancer, I saw her in Swan Lake, which I really liked as well Odette than Odile, it was a delicious moment to see her in Gamzatti in 2015, and her unforgettable Myrtha which amazed me of course her Kitri is a reference, her technique is excellent and she offers a grace and a very suggestive style , the star dancer Germain Louvet is also one of my favorites for his excellent and truly fabulous technique, his jumps, his precision, he already danced this role with Eléonore Baulac a few years ago, and had great success, this will therefore be exactly the same but this time with star Hannah O'Neill. On March 29, the star Valentine Colasante is scheduled to appear on stage, this exceptional dancer, who was promoted to opera star precisely in this ballet, Don Quixote in 2018. Valentine Colasante danced several performances in the role of the street dancer, Mercedes, and just as the run of performances was ending she was given the role of Kitri, she did it so well, it was a magical night, she was named star of the company in a wonderful evening that will never be not forgotten by the people who were there, since then Valentine Colasante dances this role several times, especially the pas de deux, so she is one of the best Kitris in the world, without a doubt, elegance, sympathy, technique and the mystery gives her role of Kitri, a unique magic, a fantastic dancer who will dance alongside the elegant dancer Marc Moreau who was chosen as a principal dancer alongside the dancer Hannah O'Neill when they were finishing a Balanchine ballet . In principle, the casting of dancers in this series will be like this, although there may be some variations. In any case, we can get an idea of what this cast of stars from the Paris Opera will be like, which will delight the Parisian public and the whole world who will fly to Paris to see the stars and dancers of this company fabulous. The first dancer Roxane Stojanov will make her debut in the role of Kitri in this series, this excellent dancer will offer an explosive Kitri which will undoubtedly be a very interesting performance for ballet lovers because it is always pleasant to witness a debut, his partner will be Thomas Docquir who will also make his debut in the role of Basilio. On April 13, the couple who will dance a single show is a golden opportunity to discover new talents, even if Pablo Legasa has already demonstrated on several occasions his fabulous value, an exceptional dancer, he will be an unrivaled Basilio. Hohyun Kang Sujet will be her Kitri in this exceptional performance and we will be able to discover the potential of this dancer who has already enchanted the public in her Manou de la Bayadère, in Balanchine, in Mayerling, as the fabulous and delicious Cupid, and in the third variation of la bayadère, we are impatiently waiting to see her Kitri.

star Hannah O'Neill will also dance alongside Hugo Marchand, the two have danced together before, I've seen them a few times and they are wonderful, they are both great, so we are in for a memorable performance. This series has two days where there are still no dancers assigned, I imagine it will be an international star who will be invited to dance in Paris, I don't know yet, so as soon as we find out, I will. 'll write, because I'm intrigued to know who will fly to Paris to be Kitri and her Basilio. This series promises to be super exciting and awesome. Héloïse Bourdon has already danced Kitri, I saw her a long time ago with Karl Paquette, this time she will dance alongside the fabulous Jérémy-Loup Quer, a show that could be one not to be missed, two exceptional dancers. Silvia Saint-Martin and Francesco Mura will shine in the roles of Kitri and Basilio, I have seen them dance in other ballets and I really like them, but I have never seen them dance together, so it will also be an interesting performance, without a doubt. Guillaume Diop, the most versatile dancer who knows how to dance everything and it's wonderful to see him in absolutely any role, he will also offer us his electrifying version of Basilio, it will be quite a spectacle, the divine Eléonore Baulac who already danced this role with Germain Louvet will be his delicious Kitri, a function not to be missed under any circumstances. Of course, this Parisian series will be the best we can see in 2024, even if Swan Lake will already be the best, who will Odette dance? , and if there will be international guest stars?. We will inform you, the year 2024 looks great, and also Giselle, a better classical ballet season is already impossible, it's wonderful, I hope they program Sleeping Beauty soon, because with these stars of the dance we can give a wonderful beauty, so wonderful that it could be recorded, but all that already belongs to a future that I hope is near.
