Bolshoi Theatre – September Season Highlights

The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow also presents a magnificent program this September—making it a true challenge to decide between heading to St. Petersburg or staying in the Russian capital, as each night offers spectacular performances.

The season opens on September 5 with Mozart’s Don Giovanni, my personal favorite opera—an exceptional way to begin the cultural year in Moscow.

The ballet season proper begins on September 15 with Swan Lake, performed on the very stage where it was first seen, still the ultimate reference for this timeless masterpiece.

For this opening night, Alyona Kovalyova will take on the iconic role of Odette/Odile, with Nelli Kobakhidze as the Princess Mother, Artemy Belyakov as Prince Siegfried, and Denis Rodkin—whom I have often admired as Siegfried—appearing here in the role of the Evil Genius.

This trio of stars promises an unforgettable evening to launch the ballet season, with Kovalyova’s elegance, Belyakov’s princely presence, and Rodkin’s commanding intensity ensuring a night of pure magic on the Bolshoi stage.

Bolshoi Theatre – September Ballet Highlights

This September, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow presents a season so dazzling that choosing between Moscow and St. Petersburg will be a true challenge—every evening brings a performance to remember.

Kovalyova’s luminous artistry, Belyakov’s princely elegance, and Rodkin—whom I have often admired as Siegfried—now in the role of the Evil Genius, promise an unforgettable opening night for the Bolshoi’s ballet season.

On September 16, one of Moscow’s brightest stars, Anna Nikulina, will bring her deeply felt Odette to the stage, with Anastasia Meskova as the Princess Mother, Dmitry Vyskubenko as Siegfried, and Vladislav Lantratov—a Bolshoi legend—as the Evil Genius.

September 17 offers:

Théâtre du Bolchoï – Les temps forts de septembre

En septembre, le Théâtre du Bolchoï à Moscou propose une saison si éblouissante qu’il sera difficile de choisir entre la capitale et Saint-Pétersbourg – chaque soir réserve une représentation mémorable.

La saison s’ouvrira le 5 septembre avec Don Giovanni de Mozart, une manière idéale de lancer l’année culturelle dans la capitale russe.

La saison de ballet débutera en majesté le 15 septembre avec Le Lac des cygnes, sur la scène même où ce chef-d’œuvre fut créé et qui demeure son écrin historique.

Mariinsky Theatre – September Season Highlights

The Mariinsky Theatre has unveiled its September program, and we are in for a true treat. The lineup could not be more spectacular. Verdi and Puccini will take center stage in several evenings of opera, with their celebrated works sure to delight all lovers of the lyrical arts.

Yet for many of us, the real anticipation is for the ballet. The season opens on September 10 with a dazzling performance of La Bayadère, starring the international superstar Viktoria Tereshkina as Nikiya, alongside the brilliant Kimin Kim as Solor. The role of Gamzatti, one of my personal favorites, will be danced by second soloist Daria Kulikova—a magical evening awaits.

On September 11, another beloved star, Renata Shakirova, will take on the role of Nikiya, partnering with Philipp Stepin as Solor and Maria Chernyvskaya as Gamzatti. A night full of passion and beauty is guaranteed.

September 12 brings the chance to discover Maria Iliushkina’s Nikiya, with Even Capitaine as Solor and Alexandra Khiteeva as Gamzatti.

September 13 is a day to be in Russia—two La Bayadère casts in one day! The first performance features Maria Khoreva, Yevgeny Konovalov, and Maria Bulanova, while the evening will showcase Oxana Skorik, Timur Askerov, and Ekaterina Kondaurova—a trio of pure brilliance. That same day, opera lovers can enjoy Verdi’s Aida.

Moving into Swan Lake:

• September 17: Viktoria Tereshkina dances the iconic Odette/Odile, with Roman Belyakov as Prince Siegfried—an unmissable opportunity to see one of the world’s greatest ballerinas in this legendary role.

• September 18: Oxana Skorik offers her lyrical Odette and fiery Odile, partnered by Nikita Korneyev.

• September 19: Maria Iliushkina and Even Capitaine take the stage.

• September 20: Nadezhda Batoeva dances Odette, with Timur Askerov as her partner.

On September 21, there’s a Romeo and Juliet double bill: May Nagahisa with Philipp Stepin in the matinee, and Renata Shakirova with Kimin Kim in the evening—a dream pairing for any ballet fan.

September 23 offers a stunning Michel Fokine program—Chopiniana, Le Spectre de la rose, The Swan, and Schéhérazade—with a star-studded cast including Tereshkina, Askerov, Belyakov, Shirinkina, Osmolkina, Konovalov, Mazzi, Kuznetsova, and Borodulina.

On September 25, Renata Shakirova and Kimin Kim will shine in Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin—a rare and magical opportunity to see this ballet live.

September 27 brings a double performance of The Fountain of Bakhchisarai: the afternoon with Maria Khoreva, Nikita Korneyev, Danila Korsuntsev, and Maria Bulanova; the evening with Maria Shirinkina, Pavel Mikheyev, Soslan Kulaev, and Kristina Shapran—a feast for the most demanding ballet lovers.

On September 28, a truly memorable date, Giselle takes the stage. In the evening, Maria Iliushkina will dance the title role, partnered by Even Capitaine—an unmissable event for admirers of her artistry.

Finally, September 30 closes the month with The Bronze Horseman, featuring Philipp Stepin and the radiant Renata Shakirova.

This September, St. Petersburg promises a month of unforgettable performances—world-class stars, legendary ballets, and the magic of the Mariinsky. Happy ballet!

Le Théâtre Mariinsky a dévoilé son programme pour septembre, et nous avons de quoi nous réjouir. L’affiche ne pourrait être plus somptueuse. Verdi et Puccini seront à l’honneur lors de plusieurs soirées lyriques, avec leurs chefs-d’œuvre incontournables qui raviront les amateurs d’opéra.

Mais pour beaucoup d’entre nous, l’attente se concentre sur la danse. La saison s’ouvrira le 10 septembre avec une production éblouissante de La Bayadère, mettant en vedette la superstar internationale Viktoria Tereshkina dans le rôle de Nikiya, aux côtés du brillant Kimin Kim dans celui de Solor. Le rôle de Gamzatti, l’un de mes préférés, sera interprété par la soliste Daria Kulikova. Une soirée magique en perspective.

Le 11 septembre, une autre étoile adorée, Renata Shakirova, incarnera Nikiya, avec Philipp Stepin dans le rôle de Solor et Maria Chernyvskaya en Gamzatti.

Le 13 septembre est une date à noter : deux distributions de La Bayadère le même jour ! En matinée, Maria Khoreva, Yevgeny Konovalov et Maria Bulanova ; le soir, Oxana Skorik, Timur Askerov et Ekaterina Kondaurova. Les amateurs d’opéra pourront également voir Aida de Verdi ce jour-là.

Le 27 septembre offrira deux représentations de La Fontaine de Bakhtchissaraï : en matinée avec Maria Khoreva, Nikita Korneyev, Danila Korsuntsev et Maria Bulanova ; le soir avec Maria Shirinkina, Pavel Mikheyev, Soslan Kulaev et Kristina Shapran.

Le 28 septembre sera une date mémorable : Giselle avec Maria Iliushkina dans le rôle-titre et Even Capitaine en Albrecht – une soirée à ne pas manquer.

Enfin, le 30 septembre clôturera le mois avec Le Cavalier de bronze, interprété par Philipp Stepin et la lumineuse Renata Shakirova.

Ce mois de septembre à Saint-Pétersbourg s’annonce inoubliable : étoiles de renommée mondiale, ballets légendaires et la magie du Mariinsky. Vive le ballet !
