Barcelona - The Sleeping Beauty - Tchaikovsky - Bolshoi Ballet - Nikolai Tsiskaridze - Jun /Jul 2000

More than twenty-five years ago, in the summer of 2000, the visit of the Bolshoi Ballet to Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu became an extraordinary artistic event. The production of The Sleeping Beauty was received with overwhelming enthusiasm, and the theatre responded with full houses and electrifying applause. It was, without doubt, a triumphant success — but what made it truly unforgettable was the exceptional cast the company brought with them.

The Bolshoi arrived not with a reduced touring ensemble, but with a constellation of its finest dancers, covering all principal and character roles with remarkable depth. The level was consistently world-class across all seven performances (June 27–30, July 1–2, 2000).

What stood out above all was the presence of Nikolai Tsiskaridze, already a towering figure of the ballet world. His performances as Prince Désiré were the highlight of the run — technically flawless, dramatically compelling, and received with overwhelming admiration. Alongside him, the rotating Auroras and the richness of the supporting cast created a rare sense of depth: every performance offered a slightly different constellation of stars, yet maintained the same exceptional standard.

Even today, this level of casting feels remarkable. The Bolshoi did not simply tour — it showcased its full artistic power. That is why, decades later, these performances at the Liceu are still remembered not just as a success, but as a benchmark of excellence in classical ballet.

Saint Petersburg - Mariinsky Theatre - October 2025

Mariinsky Ballet – An Enchanting October Season

An Enchanting October at the Mariinsky Theatre

This October, the Mariinsky Theatre opens its grand doors to a month of pure ballet enchantment — a celebration of beauty, grace, and the timeless artistry that has made St. Petersburg the heart of classical dance. The golden halls of this legendary theatre will host performances of rare brilliance, bringing together the stars of the Mariinsky and, in a special collaboration, the celebrated artists of the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow.

6 October – Swan Lake

The month begins with a night of legend. In just a few hours, the curtain will rise on Swan Lake, Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s immortal masterpiece, starring the incomparable Viktoria Tereshkina as Odette–Odile and the electrifying Kimin Kim as Prince Siegfried. Tereshkina, a true icon of the Russian stage, is acclaimed for her dazzling technique and emotional depth — her Odette is ethereal and tragic, her Odile glittering with danger. Together with Kimin Kim, whose soaring leaps and noble presence mesmerize audiences worldwide, this promises to be an unforgettable evening, one that defines the very essence of ballet perfection.

7 October – Romeo and Juliet

The next evening brings Romeo and Juliet, Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic ballet of love and destiny. The radiant Oxana Skorik, with her long, lyrical lines and aristocratic elegance, dances Juliet, while Nikita Korneyev embodies the youthful passion of Romeo. Their partnership captures both the tenderness and tragedy of Shakespeare’s timeless lovers.

8 October – La Sylphide

On Wednesday, La Sylphide graces the Mariinsky stage, a poetic vision of romantic ballet by Herman von Løvenskiold. The enchanting Maria Shirinkina, known for her delicacy and musical phrasing, portrays the elusive Sylph, opposite Kian Mangis as James, in a performance sure to shimmer with dreamlike beauty.

9–12 October – The Bolshoi at the Mariinsky

From the 9th to the 12th of October, the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow visits St. Petersburg for a historic series of performances at the Mariinsky II stage, presenting The Bright Stream, a joyful ballet by Dmitry Shostakovich — a sparkling blend of humor, charm, and virtuosic dancing.

The first evening features Anastasia Stashkevich, Alexei Putintsev, Elizaveta Kokoreva, and Vladislav Lantratov, dancers of extraordinary vitality and precision.
On 10 October, the stage belongs to Anna Nikulina, Igor Tsvirko, Kristina Kretova, and Artem Ovcharenko.
Among them, Anna Nikulina shines as one of Moscow’s most sublime ballerinas — a dancer of rare intensity and emotional truth. Her presence, radiant and regal, captures the very soul of Russian ballet. Her artistry, blending power with poetic sensitivity, makes her performances moments of pure transcendence.

The Bolshoi’s visit continues on 11 and 12 October, with alternating casts including Daria Khokhlova, Denis Rodkin, Eleonora Sevenard, Yaroslavna Kuprina, and Egor Gerashchenko — each performance a feast of color and joy, a meeting of two great ballet traditions in one unforgettable weekend.

11–12 October – Don Quixote and Vaganova Academy

Meanwhile, at the Mariinsky Theatre, Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus bursts with energy and brilliance. On 11 October, Maria Khoreva, the dazzling young virtuosa, joins Yevgeny Konovalov, while on 12 October, Anastasia Lukina and Ruslan Stenyushkin bring new life to the fiery Spanish tale.
Earlier that Sunday, the Vaganova Ballet Academy performs Die Puppenfee (The Fairy Doll), a delightful glimpse into the next generation of Russian talent.

13–15 October – Romantic and Classic Jewels

On 13 October, La Sylphide returns, with Camilla Mazzi and Alexei Timofeyev, while the Mariinsky Concert Hall offers a lyrical performance of Dvořák’s Rusalka.
14 October brings The Fountain of Bakhchisarai, danced by Olesya Novikova, Nikita Korneyev, Danila Korsuntsev, and Maria Bulanova — a ballet steeped in passion and dramatic storytelling.
15 October at Mariinsky II presents the visionary Nutcracker staged by Mihail Chemiakin, with Maria Shirinkina and Alexander Sergeev, a modern and deeply theatrical reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s classic.

19–25 October – The Great Romantic Ballets

Mid-month, Don Quixote returns on 19 October, featuring Elena Svinko, Elena Yevseyeva, and Alexei Timofeyev.
Then, Giselle takes the stage in a series of luminous performances: on 24 October, Maria Khoreva and Yevgeny Konovalov lead the cast; on 25 October, Olesya Novikova partners Minchul Jeon, preceded by a matinée of Giselle by the Leonid Yakobson Ballet Theatre.

30 October – Giselle with May Nagahisa

The month concludes in beauty on 30 October, with Giselle starring the divine May Nagahisa, whose fragile lyricism and crystalline technique have made her one of the most captivating young ballerinas of her generation, partnered by Even Capitaine.

A Month of Ballet Brilliance

From the ethereal Viktoria Tereshkina and the breathtaking Kimin Kim, to the passionate Anna Nikulina, the poetic Olesya Novikova, and the radiant Maria Khoreva, October at the Mariinsky Theatre is nothing short of a celebration of the highest art of dance.
Each evening promises a new encounter with beauty, each performance a moment suspended in time.

Moscow - Swan Lake - 16/18 april 2024

Well, now we have an excuse to go to Moscow again, yes friends, one cannot miss the new Swan Lake, which will be an event. On the opening day, April 16, this mini series of four performances opens with the great dancer Anna Nikulina alongside the fabulous prince Semyon Chudin. The great muse and mythical dancer of international ballet, considered one of the best dancers in the history of world ballet, Ekaterina Maximova was Anna Nikulina's teacher, and there is the result, we have on stage one of the most delicate and divine Odette who There is currently on the international scene, in addition, Anna Nikulina has been lucky enough to have as a teacher who, according to experts, has been the best Aurora of the Bolshoi, Nina Semizorova, who I have been lucky enough to see dance, and she truly is a a reference, divine dawn, just as the two great teachers have been able to transmit to their disciple the divine Anna Nikulina who already danced Swan Lake when she was very young, I think at 19 years old, and since then she has been without a doubt a of the dancers on the planet who has currently most regularly danced this difficult role of Odette Odile. The superlative dancer Chudin will be a marvel as always alongside her, so this performance could be memorable. The next day we have Swan Lake again, this time with my favorite dancer, Artem Ovcharenko, who will be a luxury to have as a prince. At his side will be the solo dancer Arina Denisova, who has already danced the role of Odette with poise and a safe technique and a Captivating personality, the dancer promises a bright future.

The next day, the last day of Swan Lake, we will have another of my fabulous famous and most beautiful dancers from the company, one of my favorites precisely along with Anna Nikulina, Yulia Stepanova. I have been following her career for so long that I have forgotten how many times I have seen her dance, and I can't decide which is her best role. Honestly, she dances everything divinely, everything, she is a truly magnificent dancer, she is elegant. , tall, beautiful, unsurpassed lines, excellent technique, gorgeous, she has everything to be a star dancer which is precisely what she is, the first dancer in Moscow, one of the best in the world in my opinion, without a doubt. This dancer is divine as Raymonda, it is my favorite role for her, although in Odette and Odile she is also sensational, especially in Odile, since she is a woman who captivates with her simple look, she is a star in the Russian firmament, she could It can be said that she is, along with the stars of Saint Petersburg, the best dancer in Russia today, although for me she is still the queen, Svetlana Zakharova and Viktoria Tereshkina. I wish you a happy evening at the ballet in this beautiful Moscow theater with the most beautiful music that Tchaikovsky could compose to create the most legendary ballet that has been so successful in recent times. We will soon see it in the cinema in London on the 24th with the superstar Yasmine Naghdi, also the Rome Opera Ballet company will fly to Barcelona to present its version of Swan Lake with the director Eleonora Abbagnatto, although we still do not know the casting of those days in Barcelona, nor if Anna Nikulina and Semyon will be invited, who were already invited when this same production was offered in Rome, perhaps they will be invited to Barcelona, we do not know, as soon as we know we will inform you, it would be wonderful , although in this case I also really want to meet the ballet stars of the Rome Ballet. We will inform you as soon as we know something. In Paris they are already preparing the return of a series for the summer, which will be wonderful, because we already know who will dance Odette / Odile and her princes, the castings are dreamlike, Swan Lake is being a success in All Europe. The kyiv Ballet is also achieving great success in its European tours that will coincide in Barcelona with the Rome Opera Ballet.
