Moscow - Mercury City Tower

Here stands one of the tallest buildings not only in Moscow but in all of Europe, ranking fifth among the continent’s highest structures. This extraordinary tower captivates instantly with its breathtaking silhouette, a form so striking that it appears spectacular from every angle. Its elegant proportions and shimmering presence make it a dream subject for skyscraper photographers and architecture enthusiasts alike.

The building is located in the Moscow International Business Center (MIBC), a modern financial district defined by bold verticality and futuristic ambition. Comparable in purpose to London’s Canary Wharf or Paris’s La Défense, this area of Moscow distinguishes itself through its remarkable diversity of architectural styles. Rather than a uniform skyline, the district offers an eclectic collection of avant-garde designs, making it particularly engaging to explore on foot. Every turn reveals a new perspective, a new tower, and a new opportunity to admire cutting-edge architectural expression.

Rising near the monumental Federation Tower—the tallest building in Moscow and the second tallest in Russia after Saint Petersburg’s Lakhta Center—this tower commands attention in an already dramatic skyline. One of its most iconic features crowns the summit: a gigantic digital clock, visible from hundreds of meters away, both day and night. This luminous timepiece has become a defining element of the building’s identity and a recognizable landmark within the city.

The entrance to the tower is as refined as its exterior is striking. Visitors are welcomed into an elegant lobby finished in warm, vanilla-toned marble, creating an atmosphere that is both luxurious and inviting. World clocks line the space, displaying the time in major global capitals, reinforcing the building’s international character. Directly facing the reception area are the elevator halls, seamlessly integrated into the overall design and emphasizing both efficiency and sophistication.

Known as Mercury City Tower, the building rises to a total of 75 floors and stands out unmistakably due to its distinctive copper-colored cladding. Originally intended to be clad in reflective silver glass, the final design instead adopted this warm, golden-copper façade, allowing the tower to glow under sunlight and shimmer subtly at dusk. This choice sets it apart from its neighboring skyscrapers and gives it a unique visual presence not only within the MIBC but across the entire city of Moscow.

Mercury City Tower is a mixed-use development, carefully designed to combine functionality with exclusivity. The lower portion of the building is dedicated primarily to office spaces, while the upper levels are reserved for residential apartments offering panoramic views over Moscow’s vast urban landscape. These apartments occupy the highest floors and were designed with flexibility in mind, allowing units to be merged to create expansive, high-end living spaces. In addition to offices and residences, the tower includes retail areas, restaurants, conference facilities, a fitness center, and extensive parking, making it a fully self-contained vertical city.

Vertical transportation within the tower is equally impressive. The building is equipped with a total of 29 elevators, including 20 passenger elevators and 9 service elevators. Two of these elevators are high-speed units capable of reaching speeds of up to 7 meters per second, ensuring swift and efficient travel throughout the tower. Notably, 10 of the passenger elevators operate using the advanced TWIN system, allowing two independent elevator cabins to function within a single shaft, significantly enhancing capacity and efficiency.

With its sculptural form, luminous façade, iconic clock, and sophisticated interior spaces, Mercury City Tower stands as one of the most fascinating skyscrapers in Europe. It is a powerful symbol of Moscow’s modern ambition and architectural innovation, seamlessly blending bold design with practical functionality. Whether admired from afar or explored up close, this tower remains an unforgettable presence on the Moscow skyline and a true landmark of contemporary high-rise architecture.

The history of tramway

Moscow

The history of the tramway — a journey through cities and time

A tramway — also known as a tram, streetcar, or trolley — is a form of urban rail transport that runs along tracks built into city streets. For more than two centuries, trams have helped people move through growing cities in a clean, efficient, and friendly way.

Although they may seem modern today, their story began long ago.

The earliest trams: rails before engines

The very first passenger tram system appeared in 1804 in Wales, with the Swansea and Mumbles Railway. At first, these early trams were pulled by horses.

Interestingly, tramways developed earlier in the United States than in Europe. This happened because American streets were often poorly paved, making horse-drawn buses uncomfortable and slow. Rails made travel smoother and easier.

One of the earliest recorded trams operated in Baltimore in 1828, and soon after, in 1832, New York opened what is considered the first true urban street railway along Bowery and Fourth Avenue.

By 1835, New Orleans launched a line that still exists today — the famous St. Charles Streetcar Line, one of the oldest continuously operating tram lines in the world.

🇪🇺 Trams arrive in Europe and the world

Europe followed soon after. The first European tramway opened in Paris in 1855, and quickly spread to cities like:

Berlin, London, Vienna, Budapest, Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, and Saint Petersburg.

Trams also expanded globally:

Santiago de Chile opened South America’s first tram in 1858
Sydney followed in 1860
Alexandria, Egypt in 1863
Jakarta (Batavia) in 1869

Soon, trams were connecting neighborhoods across every continent.

New technologies: cable cars and electric trams

Not all early trams used horses.

In the late 1800s, cable cars appeared — pulled by underground moving steel cables. San Francisco tested the first practical system in 1873, and cities like Chicago and Melbourne built massive cable networks.

Then came the greatest revolution: electric trams.

In 1875, inventor Fyodor Pirotsky tested the world’s first electric tram near Saint Petersburg.
By the 1880s and 1890s, electric streetcars spread rapidly across Europe and America, transforming urban transport forever.

Cities like Prague, Kyiv, Milan, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Barcelona, and many others adopted this cleaner, faster system.

The golden age of tramways

By the early 20th century, trams were the backbone of city transport.

Some networks became enormous:

• Paris once had over 1,000 km of tram lines
• Buenos Aires, Chicago, Berlin, London, and St. Petersburg had hundreds of kilometers of track
• Melbourne eventually became the largest tram system in the world — a title it still holds today

Trams shaped how cities grew, creating lively streets and connected neighborhoods.

 Decline — and rebirth

After World War II, many cities removed their tram systems, replacing them with buses and cars. Streets were redesigned for automobiles, and railways were seen as old-fashioned.

But something important was lost: clean transport, smooth rides, and human-friendly streets.

From the late 20th century onward, cities began to bring trams back — realizing their huge benefits:

✔ less pollution
✔ less traffic
✔ more passengers than buses
✔ quieter and smoother travel
✔ beautiful, green tracks in modern cities
✔ encouragement to leave cars at home

Today, tramways are symbols of sustainable urban life.

Trams today — moving cities into the future

Modern trams are fast, accessible, electric, and comfortable. They glide through city centers, connect to metro and train systems, and even help revive neighborhoods.

Many cities now design green corridors along tram tracks, planting grass and flowers that reduce noise and make streets more pleasant.

When trams appear, people naturally use cars less and enjoy the city more.

Networks in the world by route length as of 2016 are: Melbourne (256 km; 159 mi)Kyiv (231 km; 144 mi) Saint Petersburg (205.5 km; 127.7 mi) Cologne (194.8 km; 121.0 mi)Berlin (191.6 km; 119.1 mi) Moscow (183 km; 114 mi) Milan (181.8 km; 113.0 mi)Budapest (172 km; 107 mi)

 A transport system with soul

Trams are not just vehicles.
They are part of city life.

They carry workers in the morning, families in the afternoon, tourists discovering streets, and students heading home at night. They connect history with modern life — past with future.

From horse-drawn cars in the 1800s to today’s silent electric trains, tramways remain one of the most beautiful ways to move through a city.

Moscow - Swan Lake - 16/18 april 2024

Well, now we have an excuse to go to Moscow again, yes friends, one cannot miss the new Swan Lake, which will be an event. On the opening day, April 16, this mini series of four performances opens with the great dancer Anna Nikulina alongside the fabulous prince Semyon Chudin. The great muse and mythical dancer of international ballet, considered one of the best dancers in the history of world ballet, Ekaterina Maximova was Anna Nikulina's teacher, and there is the result, we have on stage one of the most delicate and divine Odette who There is currently on the international scene, in addition, Anna Nikulina has been lucky enough to have as a teacher who, according to experts, has been the best Aurora of the Bolshoi, Nina Semizorova, who I have been lucky enough to see dance, and she truly is a a reference, divine dawn, just as the two great teachers have been able to transmit to their disciple the divine Anna Nikulina who already danced Swan Lake when she was very young, I think at 19 years old, and since then she has been without a doubt a of the dancers on the planet who has currently most regularly danced this difficult role of Odette Odile. The superlative dancer Chudin will be a marvel as always alongside her, so this performance could be memorable. The next day we have Swan Lake again, this time with my favorite dancer, Artem Ovcharenko, who will be a luxury to have as a prince. At his side will be the solo dancer Arina Denisova, who has already danced the role of Odette with poise and a safe technique and a Captivating personality, the dancer promises a bright future.

The next day, the last day of Swan Lake, we will have another of my fabulous famous and most beautiful dancers from the company, one of my favorites precisely along with Anna Nikulina, Yulia Stepanova. I have been following her career for so long that I have forgotten how many times I have seen her dance, and I can't decide which is her best role. Honestly, she dances everything divinely, everything, she is a truly magnificent dancer, she is elegant. , tall, beautiful, unsurpassed lines, excellent technique, gorgeous, she has everything to be a star dancer which is precisely what she is, the first dancer in Moscow, one of the best in the world in my opinion, without a doubt. This dancer is divine as Raymonda, it is my favorite role for her, although in Odette and Odile she is also sensational, especially in Odile, since she is a woman who captivates with her simple look, she is a star in the Russian firmament, she could It can be said that she is, along with the stars of Saint Petersburg, the best dancer in Russia today, although for me she is still the queen, Svetlana Zakharova and Viktoria Tereshkina. I wish you a happy evening at the ballet in this beautiful Moscow theater with the most beautiful music that Tchaikovsky could compose to create the most legendary ballet that has been so successful in recent times. We will soon see it in the cinema in London on the 24th with the superstar Yasmine Naghdi, also the Rome Opera Ballet company will fly to Barcelona to present its version of Swan Lake with the director Eleonora Abbagnatto, although we still do not know the casting of those days in Barcelona, nor if Anna Nikulina and Semyon will be invited, who were already invited when this same production was offered in Rome, perhaps they will be invited to Barcelona, we do not know, as soon as we know we will inform you, it would be wonderful , although in this case I also really want to meet the ballet stars of the Rome Ballet. We will inform you as soon as we know something. In Paris they are already preparing the return of a series for the summer, which will be wonderful, because we already know who will dance Odette / Odile and her princes, the castings are dreamlike, Swan Lake is being a success in All Europe. The kyiv Ballet is also achieving great success in its European tours that will coincide in Barcelona with the Rome Opera Ballet.
